Summer of the Arts

Looking forward to a new tree on the Pentacrest! It's another exciting day on the Pentacrest, folks. On September 10th our campus and community felt the void after a storm took down a very special tree. You'll remember we bid a sad farewell to the old European Larch that served us so well, but the heroes on the University of Iowa Landscape Services team are here to wipe our tears!

Today we welcome a new European Larch. Thanks to the hard work of UILS, the previous stump was completely removed so this one could be planted in the exact same spot. But there are more similarities between the old tree and the new one than just species type and placement.

"There are some low limbs on this tree that very much resemble the old one," Landscape Services Assistant Manager Shawn Fitzpatrick told us. The team says they will be intentional with positioning of the tree, with hopes it may grow to resemble the long and inviting limbs of the old larch.

UI Arborist Andy Dahl searched high and low for this tree and got lucky, ordering the 15 year old, 25 foot tall beauty which arrived on campus via semi truck from Fiore Nursery in Chicago early this morning. "The tree is dormant but will awaken in the spring with a return of its' bright green needles and rosy colored cones - all the colors and traits of the old larch that we loved," Dahl told us.

The Pentacrest Museums welcome our new tree and wish a very happy birthday on this special planting day to Shawn Fitzpatrick. Shawn plans to take a photo next to the new larch each year on his birthday, today marking the first in that series.
