Despite his youth, Minneapolis-based guitarist and composer, Will Schmid, has been gigging at venues throughout the Twin Cities for over five years. His duos, trios and quartets frequent popular spots including the Black Dog Cafe in St. Paul, Jazz Central in Minneapolis, and the 318 Cafe in Excelsior. In addition to headlining shows, his bands have opened for Eric Kamau Grávátt, Dave King, Billy Peterson, and more. With fellow guitarist Adam Astrup, Schmid co-led ensembles at the 2016 Winter Jazz Festival, the 2016 Twin Cities Jazz Festival, and the 2016 Iowa City Jazz Festival. Schmid now spends much of his time in Cleveland where – while pursuing a degree in physics at Case Western Reserve University – he studies with Don Better and continues to play and compose.
The Will Schmid Quartet is a sensitive, ECM-style band featuring pianist Patrick Adkins, bassist Charlie Lincoln, and drummer Edmund Catlin. Experimenting with time, texture, and form as much as melody and rhythm, the quartet provides a dynamic listening experience through eclectic original compositions and thoughtful improvisations.
