I create wheel-thrown porcelain with an equal emphasis on form and function. My surface design exploration consists of carving and image transfer techniques from photosensitive emulsion screen-prints.
I use earthenware low-fire clay in the electric kiln and Raku fired methods to fire my ceramic sculptures and my pottery. I use gold lusters to enhance the surface of my sculptures.
Wheel thrown and hand built high fire stoneware. Pieces may be textured with slip, carved, altered, glazed, sifted with wood or crystalline glazed. Size and shape determine if single or twice fired.
I make forms that establish a partnership between shape and linear patterns cut into the surface. These are enhanced with rubbed oxides or shaved glazes fired by gas reduction or electric oxidation.
I use hand construction using all methods of forming clay plus thrown components. The patterns formed by this assembly process are highlighted by using a pallet of color drawn from over 100 glazes.
I work with high fire clays fired in reduction. My work is thrown on a kick wheel and modified with various tools to create different textures and forms. I often incorporate natural wood and fiber.
I try to capture the beauty of the natural landscapes around Iowa and places I have traveled in the past in my paintings and I am particularly drawn to sunsets. I have tried several different styles and mediums of paint but I mainly work in acrylics. My other passion is in ceramics and although I mostly throw on the pottery wheel, I have been experimenting with handbuilt animals and structures lately. I also delve into drawing and create images of animals using ink pens and occasionally colored pencils.
