Julia DeValk

Julia DeValk

About:

I try to capture the beauty of the natural landscapes around Iowa and places I have traveled in the past in my paintings and I am particularly drawn to sunsets. I have tried several different styles and mediums of paint but I mainly work in acrylics. My other passion is in ceramics and although I mostly throw on the pottery wheel, I have been experimenting with handbuilt animals and structures lately. I also delve into drawing and create images of animals using ink pens and occasionally colored pencils.

A customer will sit in front of me and I will draw a fun cartoon of them. I’ll enhance certain features of their face. I’ll draw with a marker first, then I will color the drawing with an airbrush.

My work is a response to spontaneous mark making, the search for and creation of sketched images, enhanced by the addition of collage. The result is funny, unique and sometimes weird characters.
