The Dakota Combo is a program of the MacPhail Center for Music (Minneapolis), supported by the Dakota Foundation for Jazz Education (DFJE), A Twin Cities-based nonprofit whose mission is to create and support opportunities for Twin Cities area youth to play and learn through jazz. Selected each fall through open auditions, the Dakota Combo brings together tip instrumental jazz students in grades 9-12 to study and perform with renowned basist and educator Adam Linz. This year’s Combo is a quintet of five high school seniors: Adam Astrup, guitar; Ivan Cunningham, alto and soprano sax; Riley Swain, baritone and tenor sax; Max Voda, bass; and Simon Petrick, drums. The band plays a modern jazz repertoire including works by Monk, Mingus, Sonny Clarke, Ornette Coleman and more.
