Virtual Compilation: City High and West High Jazz Ensembles

In a “normal” year, we would be kicking off the Friday Night Concert Series, presented by Toyota of Iowa City this Friday with the City High and West High Jazz Ensembles. Since we aren’t able to get together for a live performance, we have the next best thing planned! Check out our Facebook page on Friday 5/22/20 at 6:30 PM and you’ll be able to watch a compilation of previous year’s performances from these talented students! Thanks to City Channel 4 for putting together the video and to our long-time partners at West Music Coralville for sponsoring the performers. You can still fill your instrumental needs at West Music!

 

About:  

The City High Jazz Ensemble is the premier big band in the City High Jazz program. The band maintains an extensive performance calendar as they perform for concerts at City High, other performances in the Iowa City-Cedar Rapids corridor area, and jazz festivals in Iowa and Illinois. The City High Jazz Ensemble performs for the following events: the City High 4th Ave. Show Choir Winter Show, the City High Jazz Showcase (this year’s guest artist was saxophonist Sharel Cassity from Chicago) and the KCCK Corridor Jazz Project (this year’s guest artist was Oisin Leopold from the University of Northern Iowa). In addition, the band performs at the Liberty Jazz Festival, the Coe College Jazz Summit, the Jazz In The Meadows (in Rolling Meadows, Illinois) the SEIBA District Jazz Festival and the Iowa Jazz Championships.

About:  

Over 65 students perform in three jazz ensembles at Iowa City West High School.  The West High Jazz Ensemble has qualified for the Iowa Jazz Championships every year for the last 24 years. Every year, the band gets the opportunity to work and perform with nationally known jazz artists at the Jazz Café concert hosted in December.
