Letter to the Editor from the Iowa City Downtown Arts Alliance

image-of-arts-allicance-letter-to-editorWe recognize the moment of crisis that demands an extra ounce of strength to overcome the odds. For the Iowa City Downtown Arts Alliance, that moment is now.

The COVID-19 pandemic threatens our very being. Summer of the Arts

Former performer relations intern Jared Poland was a true star for Summer of the Arts in 2012 -- he even tried out for American Idol and we all got to enjoy his beautiful singing voice! Now he's an audiologist in Austin, TX. For fun he enjoys logic puzzles, strategy games, and sightseeing.

How Jared remembers his time at Summer of the Arts: "Intern bonds were forged in the fire of hard work; wouldn't trade it for anything!" We appreciate his work -- he even continued as a key volunteer the following year after his internship!

Summer of the Arts

Mark your calendars! This will be a can't miss weekend—save the dates now!
Refocus Film Festival, our long-imagined multi-day festival celebrating the art of big screen adaptation of literature and other art forms, will be held for the first time September 18-20.

Details at www.refocusfilmfestival.org

Through thoughtfully curated short and feature film programming, multidisciplinary performances by local artists, and opportunities to connect, Refocus Film Festival brings to Iowa City a vibrant, wholly unique annual festival that spotlights source material—literature, journalism, photography, podcast, comedy and more—and presents its evolution of voice, perspective and medium to the big screen. Passes are anticipated to go on sale in July.

It's a film festival that's made for our City of Literature. And, it's not the only happening that weekend. Mission Creek Festival will launch a smaller, but equally bold event the same weekend, after the fest’s original April plans were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. And its Northside Oktoberfest too!

At a time when we can't gather together, we're looking into the future with hope that our community will be able to gather again and take in the arts. We hope to see you there!
